Replacing the screens is a relatively common laptop computer repair. Sometimes the screens are cracked or badly scratched and the need for replacement is obvious. In other cases, the need to replace the screen is questionable, because something else may be wrong with the system.
A dark, non-working screen is often due to the LCD inverter. If items on the screen are visible, but just barely, then the inverter is the likely problem. One way to tell for sure is to hook the laptop up to an external monitor. If the monitor works, then the inverter is the problem.
Hooking up the system to an external monitor can also be used to tell you if the graphics or video card needs to be replaced. Unusual colors, crazy looking graphics or no picture at all can be due to an internal component. Video cards are relatively inexpensive, especially when compared to the cost of replacing a screen.
Technicians can simply test the inverters to be sure they are the cause of a problem. If you take your laptop into a shop, the technicians should do the necessary testing to determine if you have a broken laptop screen or need some other component replaced. Remember that technicians do charge for testing and diagnosis, even if you decide not to have the computer repair completed.
Some people think that a cracked screen means it is time to buy a new laptop. Replacing rather than repairing might be the wise decision. It depends on the age and the brand of the system. Here are some examples of what I mean.
Older laptops may have multiple problems making it more costly to do the repairs than to get a new system. A Macbook repair is almost always more expensive than say repairing a Dell laptop.
Macs are simply harder to work on than other brands. Just opening the case is a tedious process. Unless the technician is experienced, he or she could break the case trying to open it. However, replacing the screen may not require opening the case. You could always get an estimate, regardless of the brand.
If you need ASUS laptop repair, you need to find an authorized dealer. To service Macs, technicians must be certified by Apple. Not all technicians repair all brands.
You’ll know it is time to do something when your screen’s performance is not what you expect it to be. Laptop computer repair is in some ways easier than desktop PC repairs. For one thing, it is much easier to carry your laptop into a shop.
